Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

In the Heat of the Night is a 1967 American drama directed by Norman Jewison for the Mirisch Corporation, in which a Black homicide detective from Philadelphia is drawn into investigating a murder in a small Mississippi town alongside its racist police chief. At the 40th Academy Awards it was nominated for seven Oscars and won five, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Rod Steiger, and its line delivered by Sidney Poitier's character, that he should be called Mister Tibbs, became one of American cinema's best remembered quotes. It is widely regarded as one of the most important American films of the 1960s.
