Rebel Without a Cause

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Rebel Without a Cause is a 1955 American coming-of-age melodrama film directed by Nicholas Ray, starring James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Jim Backus, Ann Doran, Corey Allen, William Hopper and Nick Adams, and marking the film debut of Dennis Hopper in a minor role. Filmed in the then recently introduced CinemaScope format, it focuses on emotionally confused suburban, middle-class teenagers, offering both social commentary and an alternative to earlier films that depicted delinquency in urban slum settings.
