Marty is a 1955 American drama directed by Delbert Mann in his feature debut, for Hecht-Lancaster Productions and United Artists, following an unmarried Italian-American butcher in the Bronx who meets a plain schoolteacher at a dance hall and pursues a romance opposed by his mother and friends. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the first film to receive the Palme d'Or under that name, making it one of only a handful of films to win both prizes. Ernest Borgnine won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the title role.
