An American in Paris is a 1951 American musical directed by Vincente Minnelli for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, in which a World War II veteran and aspiring painter living in Paris falls for a young Frenchwoman already involved with a French singer. The film is built around George Gershwin's music and closes with a seventeen-minute dialogue-free ballet sequence set to his symphonic poem of the same name. It won six of its eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and received the first Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
