Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 film directed by Billy Wilder, narrated from beyond the grave by struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis, played by William Holden, who is drawn into the decaying mansion and delusional world of Norma Desmond, a faded silent-film star played by Gloria Swanson, who dreams of a comeback that has already passed her by. The film's bleak portrait of Hollywood's indifference to its own discarded stars, and Swanson's performance drawing on her own real silent-era fame, made it one of the most acclaimed films ever made about the film industry itself. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Story and Screenplay, and was nominated for Best Picture at the 23rd Academy Awards.
