On the Waterfront is a 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan, starring Marlon Brando as a former boxer working as a longshoreman who informs against a corrupt union boss controlling violence and extortion on the docks. The film was made shortly after Kazan himself testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee and named other members of the Communist Party, and its sympathetic treatment of a man who informs on his own community has often been read by critics and historians as Kazan's own justification for that testimony. On the Waterfront won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brando, and is widely regarded as one of the defining American films of the 1950s.
