Gigi is a 1958 American musical directed by Vincente Minnelli for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, set in Belle Epoque Paris around 1900, in which a young woman being groomed by her family for a career as a courtesan instead chooses marriage to her wealthy suitor Gaston. At the 31st Academy Awards it won all nine of its nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Minnelli, a clean sweep record that stood for decades, and it is regarded as the last major achievement of MGM's Freed Unit of musical producers.
