The Lost Weekend is a 1945 American drama directed by Billy Wilder for Paramount Pictures, following an alcoholic New York writer through a single ruinous weekend of drinking, desperation and a hospital stay, as his girlfriend Helen tries to reach him. Of its seven Academy Award nominations it won four, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, and it shared the Grand Prix at the first Cannes Film Festival, making it one of only a handful of films to win both prizes. The Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry in 2011 for its uncompromising portrayal of alcoholism.
