How Green Was My Valley is a 1941 American drama directed by John Ford for 20th Century-Fox, based on Richard Llewellyn's novel. Narrated by its youngest son Huw, the film follows the Morgan family, coal miners in a South Wales valley during the late Victorian era, through labor unrest, mine accidents and the gradual breakdown of their community. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture along with four other Oscars, a result that became controversial because it prevailed over Citizen Kane, Sergeant York and The Maltese Falcon.
