It Happened One Night is a 1934 American romantic comedy directed by Frank Capra for Columbia Pictures, starring Claudette Colbert as a runaway heiress and Clark Gable as the newspaper reporter who accompanies her on a bus journey and eventually falls for her. It was the first film to win all five major Academy Awards, for Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay, a feat not repeated for over forty years, and its success is widely credited with establishing the screwball comedy as a durable Hollywood genre.
