Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a 1939 American political drama directed by Frank Capra for Columbia Pictures, starring James Stewart as an idealistic and naive man appointed to fill a vacant United States Senate seat, who uncovers corruption tied to a powerful political machine back home. The film's climactic sequence, in which Stewart's character conducts an exhausting one man filibuster on the Senate floor, became one of the most famous scenes in American cinema, and the film received eleven Academy Award nominations.
