Frankenstein is a 1931 American horror film directed by James Whale and produced by Universal Pictures, adapting the novel by Mary Shelley. It follows the scientist Henry Frankenstein, who assembles a creature from human remains and brings it to life with electricity; the creature turns violent after mistreatment, leading to tragedy and a mob pursuit that ends at a burning windmill. A major commercial and critical success, the film fixed the enduring image of the Frankenstein monster in popular culture and was added to the National Film Registry in 1991.
