The critical position that the director is the author of a film, whose personality can be read across a body of work even inside the studio system. Argued in Cahiers du Cinema in the 1950s, above all by Francois Truffaut's 1954 essay, and named the auteur theory in English by Andrew Sarris in 1962, it reshaped criticism, canons and the self-image of directors.
