Loosu ponnu

Loosu ponnu, Tamil for crazy girl, is a recurring stock character in Tamil cinema: a woman written as attractive but naive and unintelligent, often bubbly and childlike, unquestioningly devoted to the hero once she falls for him, and frequently depicted as needing rescue and unable to manage ordinary tasks. The trope functions as a Tamil-cinema counterpart to the Western manic pixie dream girl and dumb blonde archetypes and grew prominent in the 1990s as heroes' onscreen masculinity became increasingly exaggerated. Critic Baradwaj Rangan traces part of the archetype's origin to the casting of North Indian actresses who could not speak Tamil in lead roles, whose imperfect lip-syncing and unfamiliar gestures read on screen as scatterbrained; the trope has drawn sustained criticism as misogynistic, and some actresses have declined such roles.
