Psychedelic film

Psychedelic film is a genre defined by the influence of psychedelia and the experience of psychedelic drugs, typically marked by visual distortion and experimental narrative structure meant to disorient the viewer's sense of reality, whether or not drug use is depicted directly. The genre includes three recognized subgenres: the acid western, blending 1960s and 1970s western conventions with psychedelic imagery or drug themes, the psychodrama, merging psychological drama with imagery exploring inner consciousness, and the stoner film, built around the comedic potential of recreational cannabis use. Examples span from The Red Shoes in 1948 through the 2020s, concentrated especially in the 1960s and 1970s counterculture era, including 2001 A Space Odyssey in 1968, Yellow Submarine in 1968, Fantastic Planet in 1973 and Suspiria in 1977.
