The DC Extended Universe, known as the DCEU, is an American media franchise and shared universe of superhero films distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and based on characters from DC Comics. It began in 2013 with Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill as Superman, and was established as a connected shared universe following the 2016 release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The films share continuity through common plot elements, settings, and characters, in the manner of DC's own comic book universe.
