The Lion King (franchise)

The Lion King is a Walt Disney media franchise built around the 1994 animated film of the same name, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. Its success led to a direct-to-video sequel and prequel, a photorealistically animated remake in 2019, a 2024 prequel and sequel to that remake, a television film sequel, two spin-off television series, educational shorts, video games and merchandise. The franchise also produced a stage musical that has run since 1997 and stands as the third longest running musical in Broadway history, winning six Tony Awards including Best Musical. It is counted among the highest grossing media franchises of all time, and its works together have won all four of the major American entertainment awards, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.
