The Berlin International Film Festival, commonly called the Berlinale, is an annual film festival in Berlin, Germany, first held from 6 to 17 June 1951 at the Titania-Palast cinema. Its founding followed the initiative of American film officer Oscar Martay, whose organizing committee first met in October 1950 and settled on both the festival dates and its name. The festival has run every February since 1978 and is counted among Europe Big Three film festivals alongside Cannes and Venice, and among the world Big Five most prestigious festivals.
