The Toronto International Film Festival was founded in 1976 by Bill Marshall, Dusty Cohl and Henk Van der Kolk under the name the Festival of Festivals, an event that gathered acclaimed films from other festivals around the world for Toronto audiences. Its inaugural edition, held from 18 to 24 October 1976, drew 35,000 filmgoers to 127 films from 30 countries. The festival was renamed the Toronto International Film Festival in 1995 and has grown into one of the largest publicly attended film festivals in the world.
