Film Industry

The industrial manufacture of fame: studios discovering, renaming, grooming and contracting performers whose names sell the picture. It began when early producers started billing previously anonymous players around 1910, ruled Hollywood through long-term contracts into the 1950s, and survives transformed in the celebrity economics of every later medium.
