Short film

A short film is a motion picture with a notably brief running time, built to tell a complete story in a compressed span. Length thresholds vary by institution: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short as no more than 40 minutes including credits, while the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television allows up to 45 minutes for documentaries and 59 minutes for scripted narrative works. Short films have existed since cinema's technologically constrained earliest days and today serve as an entry point for independent filmmakers, distributed mainly through film festivals and platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo, and occasionally alongside theatrical features from studios such as Pixar and Disney.
