Rita Hayworth

Directors and Filmmakers

Rita Hayworth (1918 to 1987) was an American actress and dancer who became the leading screen glamour figure of the 1940s. Born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn, she trained from childhood as a dancer and performed with her father in a nightclub act called the Dancing Cansinos before she was signed by Fox in 1935 as Rita Cansino. After moving to Columbia Pictures under the studio head Harry Cohn, she took the name Hayworth, reached stardom in Blood and Sand in 1941 and danced on screen with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. A 1941 Life magazine photograph made her one of the most popular pin-up subjects of the war years, and her black satin number in Gilda in 1946 fixed her image as the ultimate femme fatale. She also starred in The Lady from Shanghai with her then husband Orson Welles, and made her last film, The Wrath of God, in 1972. She later suffered from Alzheimer's disease, and the attention her family brought to it after her death in 1987 helped raise awareness and funds for research.
