Karl Brown (cinematographer)

Photographic and Motion Picture Technology Pioneers

Karl Brown was an American cinematographer, screenwriter and film director, born on 26 December 1896 and died on 25 March 1990. His principal craft was cinematography, the work of lighting and photographing a motion picture, and his long career spans the silent era and the decades that followed. He was recognised by his peers in the profession: he was a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, the leading professional body of film photographers in the United States, and served as its vice president from 1924 to 1925. Alongside his camera work he wrote screenplays and directed films, which makes him a representative example of the multi-skilled film craftsperson of the early Hollywood studio period.
