Nanni Moretti (born 1953) is an Italian filmmaker, actor and producer, born in Bruneck and a lifelong resident of Rome. He made his first short films in 1973 and his first feature, Io sono un autarchico, in 1976, and he is known for wryly humorous, personal films in which he often stars himself. Sogni d'oro won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice festival, and La messa è finita won a Silver Bear special jury prize in Berlin. His best known works include Caro diario (1993), its sequel Aprile (1998) and The Son's Room (2001), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He has won the David di Donatello award for best film three times, for Caro diario, The Son's Room and The Caiman, the last a film partly about Silvio Berlusconi. Later films including We Have a Pope, Mia Madre, Three Floors and A Brighter Tomorrow competed at Cannes. He co-owns a small Rome cinema, the Nuovo Sacher, and is an outspoken figure of the Italian political left.
