Maurice Pialat (31 August 1925 to 11 January 2003) was a French film director, screenwriter and actor known for the rigorous and unsentimental style of his films. His work is often described as realist, though many critics acknowledge that it does not fit the traditional definition of realism. His everyday stories tell the bittersweet nature of the French petite bourgeoisie, with a psychological narrative style and settings often outside the big cities. The atlas records him as the director of Under the Sun of Satan.
