Věra Chytilová (2 February 1929 to 12 March 2014) was a Czech avant-garde filmmaker born in Ostrava. After working as a draftswoman, fashion model and photo retoucher, and as a clapper girl at the Barrandov studios, she entered the Prague film school FAMU at the age of 28 as the first woman to study directing there and graduated in 1962. Her first feature, Something Different, appeared in 1963, and she is best known for Daisies of 1966, a leading film of the Czech New Wave that the Czechoslovak government banned. Later films include Wolf's Hole in 1987 and A Hoof Here, a Hoof There in 1989. She received the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Czech Medal of Merit and a Czech Lion award.
