Ingrid Bergman (1915 to 1982) was a Swedish actress who became one of the most admired screen performers of the twentieth century. Born in Stockholm, she left the Royal Dramatic Theater in her home city after only a year to work in Swedish films, and the Hollywood producer David O. Selznick later brought her to the United States for the 1939 English language remake of her own film Intermezzo. Her roles in Casablanca, Gaslight, Spellbound and Notorious made her a major star, and she won Academy Awards for Gaslight, Anastasia and Murder on the Orient Express, along with Emmy and Tony awards. Her relationship with the Italian director Roberto Rossellini caused a public scandal in the United States, after which she worked largely in European film while also appearing in television and on stage. Her last acting role was in the television film Golda in 1981, and she died in London on her sixty-seventh birthday.
