Briton Hadden

Industrialists, Publishers and Executives

Briton Hadden (1898 to 1929) was an American journalist who co-founded Time magazine with his Yale classmate Henry Luce. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, studied at Yale University and became Time's first editor. He is credited with inventing the magazine's revolutionary writing manner, known as Timestyle. Although he died at the age of 31, he was considered one of the most influential journalists of the 1920s, a master innovator and stylist and an iconic figure of the Jazz Age. In media history he stands as the founding editor of a magazine that gave news a recognizable voice, and as the partner whose prose style, rather than the business side alone, shaped Time's early identity.
