Hrant Dink

Journalists and Broadcasters

Hrant Dink (1954 to 2007) was a Turkish-Armenian journalist and human rights activist who founded and edited Agos, a bilingual Turkish and Armenian newspaper. As a prominent member of Turkey's Armenian minority he argued for reconciliation between Turks and Armenians and for human and minority rights, and he criticised both Turkish denial of the Armenian genocide and the diaspora's campaign for international recognition. He was prosecuted three times for insulting Turkishness and received repeated death threats. He was assassinated in Istanbul by a 17-year-old Turkish nationalist on 19 January 2007, and more than one hundred thousand mourners marched at his funeral. His death intensified public criticism of Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code.
