Jorn Barger is an American writer and programmer credited with coining the term weblog in December 1997, when he began posting daily annotated links on his site Robot Wisdom, inspired by Dave Winer's Scripting News. Robot Wisdom became one of the earliest and most closely watched examples of the format that would later be shortened to blog, mixing links to news and esoterica with Barger's own commentary. Before that work he had been a research programmer at Northwestern University's Institute for the Learning Sciences from 1989 to 1992, working under artificial-intelligence researcher Roger Schank. Since leaving that position he has supported himself through occasional contract work while pursuing self-published writing on James Joyce, artificial intelligence and internet culture.
