Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a media franchise built on the comic book created by artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, whose first issue was published in 1984 by their own company, Mirage Studios, and became a surprise commercial success. The franchise follows four anthropomorphic turtles trained in ninjutsu and has expanded across printed media, television series, feature films, video games, and merchandise, including multiple animated series and both live-action and computer-animated films. Ownership of the franchise changed hands several times before Viacom, now Paramount Skydance Corporation, acquired it from Peter Laird in 2009.
