Sam & Max

Comics-Originated Franchises

Sam & Max is an American media franchise about Sam and Max, a pair of anthropomorphic freelance police officers turned private investigators operating in a universe that parodies American popular culture. The characters were conceived by Dave Purcell and developed by his brother, artist Steve Purcell, first appearing in a 1987 comic book series. The property found its widest audience in video games, especially the 1993 LucasArts adventure game Sam & Max Hit the Road, and later in a 1997 to 1998 animated television series and a run of episodic games from Telltale Games. Despite a relatively small body of work compared to larger franchises, Sam & Max built a devoted following and is regarded as an influential title in the history of adventure gaming.
