The Avengers is a media franchise built on the Marvel Comics superhero team created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, who first appeared in The Avengers number one with a September 1963 cover date; the original lineup included Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Hulk, Thor, and the Wasp, with Captain America joining by issue four. The comic book franchise has since spawned numerous spin-off teams, including the West Coast Avengers, the Young Avengers, and the Dark Avengers, and is distinct from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the shared film franchise that adapted the Avengers and other Marvel properties beginning with the 2012 film The Avengers.
