The Boy and the Heron is a 2023 Japanese animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki for Studio Ghibli, following a boy named Mahito Maki who relocates to the countryside after his mother's death and, drawn by a talking grey heron into a fantastical realm centered on an abandoned tower, learns to accept the people who care for him rather than trying to remake the world alone. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming only the second non-English-language film to win in that category after Miyazaki's own Spirited Away, and also won the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for best animated feature, the first non-English-language film to win the Golden Globe in that category.
