The Secret of Kells is a 2009 animated film directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey and produced by the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon, loosely inspired by the medieval legends surrounding the illuminated manuscript known as the Book of Kells. Set in a monastery under threat of Viking raids, it follows a young monk who helps complete the manuscript with the guidance of a master illuminator and a forest spirit. Distinguished by a flat, stylized visual design drawing on Celtic art and medieval illumination rather than conventional animation realism, the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
