Alice in Wonderland is a 1951 American animated film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by RKO Radio Pictures, directed by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske from Lewis Carroll's stories. It follows a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole into the nonsensical realm of Wonderland, ruled by a tyrannical Queen of Hearts, and meets characters including the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit before waking to find it was all a dream. The film was a box office disappointment on first release and drew sharp criticism from British literary circles for what they saw as an Americanized treatment of Carroll's work, but a 1974 theatrical reissue found a wide new audience, and it is now regarded as a Disney classic, notable for including more songs than any other Disney feature made up to that time.
