Kubo and the Two Strings is a 2016 American stop motion animated film directed by Travis Knight in his directorial debut, produced by the studio Laika, set in a fantastical version of feudal Japan and following a one eyed boy named Kubo who can bring origami to life by playing a magical shamisen, and who must find his late father's legendary armor before his grandfather, the Moon King, can find and take his remaining eye. Its animation drew visually on Japanese ink wash painting and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, combining traditional stop motion puppetry with digital effects at a scale unusual for the medium. Though it underperformed financially against its sixty million dollar budget, the film won the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and received Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Visual Effects.
