Henry Selick

Henry Selick is an American stop-motion animation director and filmmaker, born in 1952, known for building richly tactile, handcrafted worlds frame by frame rather than relying on hand-drawn or computer animation. He directed The Nightmare Before Christmas in 1993, a dark musical fantasy that became a defining work of the medium, followed by James and the Giant Peach in 1996 and the live-action science-fiction comedy Monkeybone in 2001. In 2009 he directed Coraline, adapted from Neil Gaiman's novel, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and confirmed his standing as one of stop-motion's leading craftsmen. He returned to the medium in 2022 with Wendell and Wild. Selick's films are distinguished by their intricate puppet work and gothic visual sensibility.
