George Dunning

George Garnett Dunning (17 November 1920 to 15 February 1979) was a Canadian filmmaker and animator best known for producing and directing the 1968 animated feature Yellow Submarine, built around the music of the Beatles. Working under severe constraints compared with major studio animation of the period, roughly a one-year production timeline and about a one million dollar budget against Disney features that typically took four years and far larger budgets, Dunning and his team delivered a psychedelic visual style that became closely associated with the film's era and helped the film become a commercial and critical success. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Dunning worked in animation on both sides of the Atlantic over his career and died in London, England, at age 58. Yellow Submarine remains his most widely recognized work and a landmark of animated feature filmmaking distinct from the dominant Disney house style of its time.
