The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film directed by Nora Twomey, produced by the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon as an international co-production between Canada, Ireland and Luxembourg, adapted from Deborah Ellis's 2001 novel of the same name. Set in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, it follows a young girl named Parvana who disguises herself as a boy to support her family after her father is arrested, working to earn money in public spaces closed to women. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and continued Cartoon Saloon's pattern of internationally co-produced, hand-drawn animated features exploring cultures underrepresented in mainstream animation.
