Fantastic Planet

Animated Feature Films

Fantastic Planet is a 1973 French-Czechoslovak animated science fiction film directed by Rene Laloux, based on Stefan Wul's novel Oms en serie, depicting a planet where diminutive humans called Oms are kept as pets and later rise in rebellion against the giant blue humanoid Draags who dominate them. The film was created using a distinctive cutout stop-motion animation style developed by artist Roland Topor, giving it a surreal visual texture unlike contemporary feature animation elsewhere. Fantastic Planet won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and is widely regarded as a landmark of adult-oriented animated science fiction.
