Anastasia is a 1997 animated musical film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman for Fox Animation Studios, built around the popular but historically unfounded legend that Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia survived the 1918 execution of the Romanov imperial family and grew up unaware of her royal identity. The film reimagines that legend as a romantic adventure in which the amnesiac heroine journeys to Paris in the company of two con men seeking the reward for finding the missing duchess. Anastasia was a substantial commercial success and is widely regarded as one of the few non-Disney animated musicals of its era to compete directly with Disney's output at the box office.
