The Lion King is a 1994 American animated musical drama from Walt Disney Feature Animation, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. It follows the young lion prince Simba, who flees his kingdom after his father Mufasa is murdered by his uncle Scar, and who must return as an adult to decide whether to reclaim his throne. The film earned about 979 million dollars worldwide, including a theatrical gross of roughly 763.5 million dollars that made it the highest-grossing film of 1994 and, at the time, the second-highest-grossing film ever made after Jurassic Park. It held the record for highest-grossing animated film until Finding Nemo passed it in 2003, and it remains the highest-grossing traditionally hand-drawn animated film of all time. It won two Academy Awards and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, sold more than 55 million home video copies worldwide, and was added to the National Film Registry in 2016 as a work judged culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
