The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 stop-motion animated musical film directed by Henry Selick from a story and characters conceived by producer Tim Burton, following Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, as he discovers Christmas Town and attempts to take over its holiday with unintended and increasingly disastrous results. The film was shot using stop-motion puppet animation on a scale unusual for a theatrical feature at the time, combining Burton's gothic visual sensibility with a full musical score and songs by Danny Elfman. The Nightmare Before Christmas became a lasting cult favorite embraced by both Halloween and Christmas audiences and is widely credited with helping revive interest in stop-motion animation as a viable feature-film technique.
