The King and the Mockingbird, released in French as Le Roi et l'Oiseau, is an animated fantasy film directed by Paul Grimault in collaboration with poet and screenwriter Jacques Prevert. Begun in 1948 as La Bergere et le Ramoneur, loosely based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, the production stalled and was released unfinished without its creators' approval in 1952; Grimault later regained the rights and completed the film as originally intended, more than three decades after work began. It is widely regarded today as a masterpiece of French animation.
