Pocahontas (1995 film)

Animated Feature Films

Pocahontas is a 1995 animated film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, directed by Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg, loosely inspired by the historical Powhatan woman and the English settlers of the 1607 Jamestown colony, imagining a romance between Pocahontas and English colonist John Smith set against tension between the Powhatan people and the newly arrived settlers. Its songs, written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, including Colors of the Wind, were widely praised, while the film's romanticized and historically inaccurate treatment of the real Pocahontas, who was a child at the time of Smith's arrival, and of colonization itself, drew sustained criticism from historians and Native American commentators both on release and in later reassessment.
